What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a plastic surgery procedure wherein unwanted fat is broken up and suctioned out of the body through a metal tube called a cannula. Sometimes referred to simply as “lipo”, the procedure slims and reshapes targeted areas of the body, improving your body contours and proportion.

Liposuction can be used to reduce fat from your:

  • Neck
  • Breasts
  • Upper Arms
  • Thighs
  • Back
  • Abdomen and waist
  • Hips and buttocks

Liposuction is not a substitute for a healthy diet and active lifestyle, nor is it a treatment for obesity.

Types of Liposuction Surgery

Dr. Feins will design an individualized treatment plan just for you that targets specific areas of fat and will help you achieve a more aesthetic body contour. Depending on your unique goals and plan, Dr. Feins will recommend an appropriate liposuction technique. The differences in techniques primarily relate to the way your fat cells are broken up prior to removal.

Depending on your situation, he may recommend:

  • Tumescent liposuction: This technique involves a saline injection into the treatment area. This injection also includes a numbing agent called lidocaine to provide more comfort during the procedure. The tumescent solution enlarges your fat cells, making them easier to reduce.
  • Power-assisted liposuction: Also called ultrasonic liposuction, this technique uses sound waves to liquefy your target areas of fat before it is reduced.

Liposuction is typically performed on an outpatient basis, with the use of general anesthesia. The procedure usually takes about one to three hours, depending on the extent of your surgical needs. Once your treatment is complete, Dr. Feins will close the incisions with sutures and dress the treated area with soft bandages and a compression garment.

Liposuction Recovery

You should expect to take about three to five days off from work following your lipo surgery. It is important to avoid strenuous activity and rest as much as possible during this time. During your follow-up appointments, Dr. Feins will inform you when it is safe to resume normal activities such as your normal exercise routine.

For the first few days following your liposuction surgery, the treatment area may be sore, tender or numb. The area may also be swollen or bruised, but these are expected symptoms and that will gradually subside. To manage any discomfort, you may take oral medications for pain as directed by Dr. Feins.

Although some liposuction results may be immediately apparent, the final results of your procedure may take a few months to be fully achieved.

Will I Have Liposuction Scars?

Liposuction surgery requires incisions on the treatment area. This will inevitably lead to a scar at the end of your recovery period, but the deepness or visibility of the scar depends on a number of factors. Choosing an experienced liposuction surgeon will reduce the risk of having a hard-to-miss scar.

As a board-certified plastic surgeon with more than 25 years of experience, Dr. Feins understands the optimal and strategic positioning of the cannula in a way that will minimize scarring. He will provide you with detailed pre and post-operative instructions that will help ensure that you don’t have deep or overly noticeable scars.

Liposuction Cost

The cost of liposuction surgery varies from person to person, depending on the number of areas being treated and the extent of your surgical needs. During your initial consultation with Dr. Feins, he will provide you with a cost estimate for your individualized treatment plan.
