What if you could improve a variety of cosmetic concerns just by pointing a gentle beam of light at your skin? Well, that’s essentially what an intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment is!
This non-invasive skin care treatment is a great way to address common skin issues including sun spots, redness, and even unwanted hair. What is IPL?
IPL stands for intense pulsed light, though it is also referred to as photo rejuvenation or a photo facial. It is a safe, effective, and non-invasive treatment that can be used anywhere on the face and body.
IPL treatments can be used for:
- Skin rejuvenation
- Removal of vascular redness
- Removal of unwanted skin pigmentation
- Hair removal
IPL Skin Rejuvenation
IPL treatments offer patients advanced non-ablative and non-invasive skin rejuvenation. The pulsed light targets and destroys unwanted blood vessels and pigmented discolorations. The process restores the even, clear skin color of your youth.
Common skin pigmentation issues that can be treated with IPL include:
- Broken capillaries
- Age spots
- Sun damage
- Acne scars
- Varicose veins
In addition to correcting pigmentation concerns, IPL boosts collagen by stimulating the fibroblasts in your skin. Fibroblasts are the cells that are responsible for the production of new, healthy collagen fibers.
This new collagen that is created through the use of IPL replenishes what time and sun damage have taken away. This collagen “plumping” effect creates smoother skin and lessens the appearance of fine lines.
IPL Hair Removal
IPL hair removal is a painless, long-term way to reduce hair growth. The light waves released from the device during treatment target the melanin pigment in the hairs, warming the follicle to slow or prevent future hair growth.
IPL hair removal treatments can be used on a variety of areas, including your:
- Bikini area
IPL can be used on most skin tones and hair colors. The color of your hair and skin tone may influence the effectiveness of your IPL treatment and the number of sessions that you will need. During your consultation, our esthetician can tell you what results you can personally expect from an IPL treatment.
For many people who have unwanted hair, IPL treatments are a great alternative to shaving, waxing, and other hair removal methods.
What to Expect from an IPL Treatment
During your treatment, our esthetician will maneuver the handpiece of the device over the areas that you want to address. The light will pulse in controlled bursts that may feel like a light pinch.
The IPL device emits many different wavelengths of light from the handpiece. The light travels down to the second layer of your skin without harming the upper layer. Once the light energy hits a pigment cell, it is absorbed by the cell and converted into heat. This heat gently destroys either the targeted skin pigment or the unwanted hair follicle.
After a treatment, your skin will temporarily be more sensitive to the sun. You should always wear sunscreen, but make sure that you are diligent in your application after an IPL session.
You will likely need several IPL sessions to achieve the desired results. Our esthetician can create a customized treatment schedule based on your skin and your aesthetic goals.
